Unbridling at the Franschhoek Literary Festival

Mom and I are honoured and humbled that our book has been included in the line-up for the 2026 Franschhoek Literary Festival (15 – 17 May). The Franschhoek Literary Festival will showcase a number of renowned authors and other significant voices in the literary world (and a host of other worlds). Take a look at the programme: https://www.flf.co.za/2026-programme/ )

My session (Moving beyond limits) is on Sunday, 17 May, 11:30 – 12:30 in the Old School Hall. How privileged am I that the esteemed South African broadcaster and moderator, Africa Melane (pictured above) will be interviewing me? Together, we will reflect on pushing past boundaries: Unbridling (co-authored by Mom and me). I never aimed to write a book about defying expectations, silencing doubt and redefining the limits of human potential. But here we are. And in Franschoek we will be…

Which makes me think – the first flight I ever took was a flight to Cape Town in my late teens. Mom and I went to Franschhoek to attend a course on Lavender growing…

Field of Persian basil

No, that’s not lavender. It’s a field of Persian basil planted between our avocado and macadamia orchards. It’s good sustainable farming practice to provide fodder for bees. The basil grows more readily in the Soutpansberg than the lavender does. We learned that through trial and error. But basil reminds me of lavender. And Franschhoek, lavender, Mom and I have a history.

Memories are made in Franschhoek

To this day, dad says that the Lavender course in Franschoek was just an excuse for us to gallivant. And I must say, I remember little about the actual course. But I have vivid recollections of the fine-dining in Franschoek. I clearly remember breathing in the aroma of delicious foods that were served in the various restaurants we visited. The trip was special because Grandad and Granny joined us (not to learn about lavender, but to share the Franschhoek experience with us).

And now, in a few weeks’ time, Granny (at the age of – well – considerably more than 90) will once again be in Franschhoek with us. She’s an avid reader and always curious about all things great and small. So she is super excited about the sessions we will attend over the few days. As well as, of course, the prospect of another Franschhoek happening.
