Moms, Memoirs & Meringues – everyone is a story

Everyone is a story

The above image shows me standing in front of a bookshelf during the recent Commonwealth Games GAPS Programme in Stellenbosch. As a kid, I preferred to be outside doing something reckless, rather than sitting reading a book. But I have come to realise that everyone is a story. Each day is a page in our own book. I used to be put off by just looking at an English set-work that the teacher would hand out at school, instructing us to: ‘Finish reading it by term two.’ But I have learned that there is a lot going on within the covers of books.

At some point in the last eight years, Mom and I realised that we were in the process of writing our story – well, a part of it. When we looked at each other that day, she said:

‘I think this is a book.’

All I could do was smile and nod.

Our story

So here we are, having published a part of our story within the covers of our book Unbridling. At the start, we had no clue about the process of writing and publishing a book. And we could never have done it without the support and expertise of many people, acknowledged in our book.

But this post is about those particularly special people who seem to be woven into everyone’s story in some way. Moms. Moms can be particularly dangerous – especially when they are praying moms. And my mom is one of those.

Moms, memoirs and meringues – everyone is a story

And that brings me to my point. We are blessed to be collaborating with a beautiful new guest house just outside Louis Trichardt, The Roaming Goat, to celebrate Mother’s Day on 9 May. You can guess at what we’ll be chatting about and doing, just from the title of the event: Moms, Memoirs and Meringues.

Remember, your mom might not be around anymore, but there are women around you who play a mothering role. Your friends are sometimes your moms. Sometimes the roles are reversed, and it’s a daughter who mothers her mom. What is within the covers of your book, your life story? Come and share with us and enjoy some time out with other moms, memoirs and of course, meringues.
