Every season has its beginning. A season is like a race that has starting blocks and someone shouts “On your marks, set, GO!” Autumn is marked by that first morning when you open the kitchen door and feel a cool crispness in the air that was not there the day before. In my world, the start of spring is marked by the first call of the “Piet-my vrou” (red-chested cuckoo). I love new beginnings.
2024- Dubai start
A heavy thunderstorm in Dubai marked the start of my 2024 sprinting season. Day one of the Dubai 2024 Grand Prix – FAZZA international championships: 12 February 2024. The day broke to a sodden athletics stadium, flooded streets in Dubai, lightning streaking wildly between high-rise buildings and hail in Abu Dabi. What a start! Day one was postponed to day two.
I enjoyed spending some time with my fellow South African athletes in Dubai. We even got to do some sight-seeing before we returned to SA, which is not something an athlete always gets a chance to do.
All in all, it was a satisfying start to my season. We are out of the blocks. I brought back a bronze medal in the 400 m T37 and a silver in the 200 m T37. My fellow South African athletes also bagged quite a few medals as a start to their season. Was that the Piet-my-vrou I thought I heard calling?
