“Am I really doing this?” The question wells up inside me as I sink into the starting blocks to practice – again. I’ve asked myself this question numerous times since I started an unexpected sprinting career five years back. Today, 7 February 2024, I am two days away from departing for the United Arab Emirates for an international comp. The first event of the season for me -the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai.
As I try my best to burst out of the blocks with speed, I am reminded of God’s grace and the bigger picture. For me, sprinting is not an individual sport. It’s about a team. And I am so thankful for the team that supports me, for family and friends who have my back, for fellow athletes who mentor and encourage me, for support from the SASCOC OPEX programme, from Laurium Capital South Africa, Isability Sports Club Limpopo, and every individual who has supported me on this journey. I am embracing every opportunity and pray that others will be inspired to do the same.
